The Hat Makes The Girl

Thursday, January 3rd, 2008

Oh dammit, I can’t contain it. I’m a hat fiend.

And in the hat world there’s NOTHING foxier than letting your hat ride to the side. That’s the epitome of vintage chic.

So if you’re not doing it, then get your hands on a Dahlia Soleil chapeau, and make sure you tilt it. Hide your eye Ma! Sex appeal is much more than bootyliciousness.

Bohemian Chic - Fashionably Unique

Monday, December 24th, 2007

At the infamous H&M on Madison Avenue here in NYC, they’re selling these bohemian inspired tams (or beret’s, if you prefer) like crazy.

Problem is, you see a lot of girls wearing the same hats, in the same two colors - black and light gray. Yes, even New Yorker’s can get fashionably ho-hum.

(Furthermore, H&M outerwear accessories DO NOT withstand daily wear too well. A few good wears and they get ratty looking.)

Alas, that’s the beauty of handmade goods. They tend to last a lot longer, you get a far greater selection, and you’ll be hard pressed to find anyone else bopping around in your stuff.

Purple Sage carries a delicious selection of tams. If you’ve got long hair, short hair - or loc’s - these hats will definitely round out your winter wardrobe.

Cocktail Hat Debauchery

Are these not the most spine tingling little chapeau’s you’ve ever seen? I want to stockpile like 20 of them. They’re from Etsy-based designer KissCurl.

They’re not for everyone though.

If while you’re looking at them you don’t get the overwhelming urge to smoke a cigarette from a gold tipped holder, and gyrate your butt really hard when you walk - (a la Jessica from Roger Rabbit) - you’re not ready for a KissCurl hat.

All the bad girls… line up and get yours. Behind me, of course.

A Good Reason To Have a Bad Hair Day

Wednesday, April 4th, 2007

My mother taught me that I should have at least two good fedoras in my closet.

“A good hat,” she said “brings out your glamorous side. It makes people pay attention to you. It gives you style.”

I couldn’t agree more.

Put on a fedora, tip it to one side, don your big shades, and you can’t help but feel like an elegant Betty.

However the problem I normally have is finding a store that stocks good quality fedoras in a multitude of styles. Well at least that was a problem until I ran across Artikal.

Holly Slaton, who runs Artikal, has a delicious selection of handcrafted millinery for discerning hat lovers.

Her summer line features lots of muted colors and hand blocked design work, on a variety of fedoras, cowboy hats and cloches.
