I Don’t Speak-O Italian-O…

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

I have an aunt (who shall remain nameless) who used to travel with my mom once a year.

She and her husband (ex husband now), and my mom and dad all used to go to this super-fastastic luxury resort in Cancun.

My mother recently confessed that my aunt would often cause a bit of embarrassment.

She’d say things like, “Senor-O… I don’t-o speak-o any Spanish-o Senor-o. Hablo English-o Senor-O…”

And as icing on the cake, she’d say it nice and loud (free premium alcohol - need I say more).

My mom is like baby boomer chic (need I say more). So she didn’t find this amusing or funny.

I agree. I’m one of those Americans who loves Paris. And Parisians love me. Why? Because I say “Bonjour” when I walk into a store. I don’t automatically try to push my English agenda on French speaking country people.

Politcally correct rant aside, I had to chuckle to myself this evening as I’m sitting here looking for something good to blog about, and I come across Momaboma.

99.9% of the site is in Italian. And the first thing that pops into my mind?

“Damn… I really like their stuff. But I don’t speak-o Italian-o.” My aunt would be so proud.

In any case, I can’t decide which one I love more - the sneaker tote or the tape measure tote. But I do know one thing. If you wear the homework tote on the train, you’ll catch at least 3 people attempting to read your bag.

My Mom Says, “Don’t Buy Alexis’ Paper Earrings…”

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

Last year when I was in my ‘craft-or-die’ mode, I created a pair of paper earrings.

I took my daughter out for the day, did some shopping, and went back to my moms house.

She looked at my paper earring creations that I’d been flaunting for the previous 6 hours, and shamelessly asked, “Did you actually wear those OUTSIDE today?”

I paused, “Yeah… I did.”

“Well please don’t wear them again. You need more practice before you’re ready for prime time.”

My mom was right. I looked at those earrings the other day and just laughed.

I’ll leave the paper jewelry making to the people who actually know what they’re doing.

Like Jennifer Lownie at Paper Jewels. She does a much better job. They have a cool, almost vintage-like look to them.

The Perfect Summer Bag Meets Fair Trade

Tuesday, May 29th, 2007

Writing this blog absolutely, positively confirms to me that we are being brainwashed by the lux-label houses.

My friend - Jane Doe of New York City - just blew $50 for a Coach knock-off on Canal Street.

She showed it to me and asked what I thought of it. (Why did she do that?)

“On the Foxy-o-Meter,” I began, “that hideous patchwork bag easily ranks a 1 out of 10.”

“Well what did you score Ms. Indie-Wholistic-still-wearing-gold-door-knocker-earrings fashion guru?” she asked.

“Don’t be jealous!” I chided. “If you just waited, you could’ve spent an extra $30-$50 for something that would’ve made the other NYC label whores jealously stare in admiration.”

I would’ve told her to go to Mad Imports.

Mad Imports isn’t the makings of just one indie designer. The handmade line comes from multiple artisans in Madagascar and Kenya.

These bags are like the epitome of summer. So fresh, colorful and original.

You put one on, and you’re like a smokin’ senorita with socially conscious class. Now that’s hot.

My Secret Obsession

Friday, May 25th, 2007

Today’s post isn’t about an indie designer. But I promise you’ll find it just as skin tight.

Today’s blog focuses on my addiction. No… not my Fruity Pebbles addiction. Or my secret romance with gold door knocker earrings from the 80’s.

I’m talking ’bout my out-of-control lust for wardrobe_remix.

Wardrobe_remix is a pool (a group) on popular photo sharing site Flickr.

If you’re a lover of DIY street fashion, grab yourself some liquid crack (aka any coffee beverage from Starbucks) and settle in for a few hours behind the monitor. While you’re there you’ll find over 14,000 photos of everyday citizens sporting their own well manicured fashion creations.

This is fashion inspiration at its most divine. And that’s all I’m gonna say!

The Color Whisperer Revealed

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007

Some people are just born with an innate knack for matching colors and styles and textures.

It’s kind of like a six sense of fashion. And like a sixth sense, it isn’t naturally honed in most people.

But Lula Girl is one those blessed with “the gift.”

I love checking her out on Flickr. She’s so beautiful and stylish. I hope when I have a gray haired husband, I still look as fly as she does.

Her necklaces are a direct reflection of her personal style, which I love.

They just make you want to smile, don’t they?
